Governers' Association of North Somerset


Governing Bodies can become members of GANS by paying an annual subscription of  £55.00 per governing body.

GANS membership year runs from April to March.  The majority of the schools in North Somerset are members and able to take advantage of what the Association offers 

GANS Forums are held at least three times a year at different local venues on a range of topical local and national issues. These forums are open to all governors whose governing body has current membership of GANS.  Complete our seminar application form to request tickets. 

Governing Bodies are asked to nominate a link Governor to facilitate two-way communication with GANS

What you get from being a member school 

  • Access to three forums each school calender year

  • Regular newsletters with key information that you need as a Governor
  • Opportunity to raise questions directly through the Executive team to the Officer responsible for schools at North Somerset Council (Director for childrens and young people's services and the lead Councillor (Executive member for children and young people's services)
  • Nominated GANS Executive team member for each member school

Governors are represented on these North Somerset bodies

Children & Young People’s Policy & Scrutiny Panel:

reviews and develops Council policies, ensures accountability, monitors the Council's performance and offers constructive proposals for the efficient working of all council services.

Strategic School Forum:

approves the proportion of the Dedicated Schools Grant to be retained by the Local Authority and the formula for distributing the proportion delegated to schools; considers wider educational issues; and advises the Local Authority on key aspects of strategy.

School Admission Forum:

strategically considers and gives advice to the Local Authority on all aspects of pupil admissions to and transfers between Norht Somerset schools.

Local Authority/School Governor Support & Development Group:

monitors the Support and Development Pack for the current year and shapes future Support and Development Packs; receives information on the take-up of training and evaluations of courses, and co-ordinates the arrangements for the Annual Governors’ Conference.

ICT Consultative Steering Group:

strategically considers and agrees the implementation of all DfES and authority led initiatives relating to ICT in schools.
